How to calculate your coffee ratio

The coffee-to-water ratio is the proportion between the amount of ground coffee and the amount of water used to brew it. It is expressed, for example, as 1:16, which means 1 gram of coffee for 16 grams of water.

The formula is simple: water (g) = coffee (g) × ratio. For example, for 15g of coffee in a V60 with a 1:16 ratio, you need 240g of water. A tighter ratio (1:2 for espresso) results in a concentrated and intense coffee; a wider ratio (1:16-17) results in a lighter, clearer cup of coffee.

Method Coffee/Water Ratio Example (coffee → water)
Espresso 1:2 18g → 36g
Moka 1:7 15g → 105g
French Press 1:12 20g → 240g
Chemex 1:15 20g → 300g
V60 1:16 15g → 240g
Batch Brew 1:16 30g → 480g

The Kafina Barista app calculates this ratio automatically for you, regardless of how much coffee you are brewing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the app free?

Yes, completely free, with no account creation required.

Do I need to download an application?

No, it works directly from the browser on your phone or computer.

Does it work with any coffee?

Yes, but we suggest our Kafina roasts, which are tailored to each method for an optimal result.

How do I calculate a coffee ratio?

The coffee-to-water ratio is calculated by multiplying the weight of the coffee by the chosen ratio: water (g) = coffee (g) × ratio. For example, 15g of coffee with a 1:16 ratio requires 240g of water.

Which coffee/water ratio should I choose for each method?

Espresso: 1:2. Moka: 1:7. French Press: 1:12. Chemex: 1:15. V60 and Batch Brew: 1:16. A tighter ratio yields a more concentrated coffee, a wider ratio yields a lighter coffee.
